SCI Phoenix held its first Volunteer Appreciation Day since before the pandemic on Nov. 15. The evening was full of anticipation and glee as volunteers flowed into the chapel where they were met by Rev. Torres, chaplaincy program director, and the inmate population that benefits from the volunteer program.

Rev. Torres welcomed the guests and introduced the executive staff. The chapel in-house band, Sound Doctrine, provided the music for the event. Supt. Terra addressed the event and spoke of the importance of volunteers and how they take a lot of the weight off staff members’ shoulders. This sentiment was shared by Torres in his brief address to the volunteers; he also added how grateful he is as volunteer coordinator that “you chose to come back” and thanked them for their ability to adapt to the changing demands of institutional needs.

The event was capped off with a light meal prepared by the culinary arts program, led by instructor Brian Kline. The event was a great success thanks to the cooperation of Phoenix security personnel as well as other staff who assisted with getting people where they needed to be.
