Spotlight on Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Jails, prisons, and other correctional intuitions across the country are on the front lines of battle against the opioid epidemic. One tool used by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections to help those experiencing substance use disorder is medication assisted treatment (MAT). First introduced in 2014, MAT is now available in all state correctional institutions. The program has also expanded to include a “warm handoff” when patients are released from custody to ensure treatment continues seamlessly when they reenter the community.
The Pennsylvania DOC’s MAT program was recently highlighted by the Addiction Policy Forum, a nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating addiction as a major health problem. Read more here.
