SCI Waymart library assistants Matt Jurnak and Karen Osecki organized a scavenger hunt in December. Participants were given a list of items to find including books, magazines, newspapers and legal information. The scavenger hunt required the inmate participants to use a computer and various books to find the information.

The scavenger hunt was a huge success! It taught participants the layout of Waymart’s library, its many functions, and its many resources. This event was particularly useful for the recent administrative transfers to Waymart.  It proved to be an exciting and informative way for the new arrivals to become acclimated with the services the library offers.

Nearly all participants completed the challenge –110 began and 109 finished it — most finishing within one 75-minute recreation library session. The scavenger hunt even caught the interest of inmates in Waymart’s Intermediate Care Unit (ICU). They were given additional time to complete the task, but they completed it nonetheless.  Waymart’s Legal Reference Aides (ILRA) assisted participants when needed. Participants who completed the scavenger hunt received a giant candy bar.
