SCI Albion's Employee Association and Empowerment Committee recently sponsored  fundraisers for two staff members who were involved in serious incidents in August.

Sgt. Emery Sparks was on vacation with his wife and three children in Atlanta, Georgia, when he was shot three times during a carjacking, and Corrections Officer James Patterson was seriously injured in an ATV accident.

Both officers are still recovering with Patterson looking to return to work soon. Sparks remains in Atlanta.

A bake sale was held on Oct. 6 with Albion staff donating homemade or store-bought items. The event raised $898, and the proceeds went toward a benefit for Sparks and Patterson on Nov. 6.

The benefit was held at a local VFW, and the entry ticket included pizza, salad and a chance auction — with many items donated by staff. There were also activities for kids, ring toss, 50/50 and other games of chance. Live music was provided by Albion's Donnie Zarembinski.

A total of $12,000 was raised, and all proceeds were donated to both families.
