DOC Forestry Camp inmates completed a two-week program through a collaboration with the DOC, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and Penn State University.

The two-week collaboration allowed 12 Forestry Camp inmates to learn fundamental subjects in forestry and arboriculture. The goal of this program is to teach inmates skills and knowledge related to employment opportunities in community forestry and natural resources.

The program included chainsaw safety training by Ben Livelsberger, forest program specialist with DCNR, on Oct. 2. He also taught inmates about wood utilization and properties.

Other subjects in the program include tree and plant biology, tree identification, benefits of trees, forest health and pest management, sustainable forest management, and tree climbing. Inmates received certificates of completion on Oct. 6.
