Cadets from the Somerset County Camp Cadet program spent the day at SCI Somerset on July 20, where they were briefed on special teams and about careers in corrections. The cadets and instructors were very appreciative of the time they had at the facility. While the instructors for the Camp Cadet Program are historically Pennsylvania State Troopers, 2022 was the first time the DOC had a Corrections Officer participate as an instructor in the Somerset County Program. CO1 Matt Orner, who is a previous graduate of Camp Cadet as well as a veteran of the United States Air Force, was invited this year to participate as an instructor.

Camp Cadet of Somerset County is week-long camp for youth 13 to 15 years of age who reside within the county. Cadets are introduced to various aspects of the Pennsylvania State Police as well as careers with different law enforcement type agencies. Cadets are also introduced to physical training, self-defense, team-building, confidence and obstacle courses. Camp Cadet is a non-profit organization that is run by members of the Pennsylvania State Police, Somerset County and Somerset Turnpike Barracks, local law enforcement and supporting adult and youth agencies. This is the 20th year for this program.
