Two dogs lay by their incarcerated handlers' feet.

October was bittersweet at SCI Mercer as its dog training program graduated its inaugural class with New Hope Assistance Dogs and welcomed the newest group of pups. The first class graduated the same day as the new puppies arrived.

Graduates:

Gracie (black): She is a 16-month-old Australian Shepherd Lab Mix. She knows her advanced commands along with PTSD commands. She loves to play fetch and enjoys her time with the other dogs.

Bolt (golden): He is an 18-month-old Golden Retriever. He knows his advanced commands along with PTSD commands. He loves to play with a tennis ball by himself and loves everyone he meets.

Ruby (black): She is a 10-month-old Standard Poodle who knows her intermediate and advanced commands. She loves to play tug with Gracie and was the princess of the group.

Ruff (apricot): He is a 10-month-old Standard Poodle who knows his intermediate and advanced commands. He loves to play fetch — as long as Gracie was not out there to beat him to the ball.  He would be content just being a couch potato.

Meet the New Pups:

Missy is an 8-month-old German Shepherd. She is currently working on the basic commands sit, down, watch me. She loves to run around with the other dogs and usually has a toy she is chewing on.

Tulip (golden) is a 3-month-old Aussie Doodle Puppy who is working on the basic commands sit, down, watch me. She loves to play with the other dogs, loves people, and loves to be heard.

Piper is a 11-week-old German Shepherd Puppy who is working on the basic commands sit, down, watch me. She is the baby of the pack and loves to be loved and enjoys her chew toys.

Jewel (cream) is a 3-month-old Golden Doodle who is working on the basic commands sit, down, watch me. She loves playing with Tulip and enjoys playing fetch with a tennis ball.
