This is professional education work in providing adult basic education instruction to inmates at a state correctional institution on an intermittent basis. An employee in this class is responsible for developing and adapting curricula, course outlines, and lesson plans to meet the educational needs of inmates at state correctional institutions. Work involves instructing inmates in a variety of general academic and remedial subjects such as basic math, reading, English, science, social studies, language arts, writing skills, and similar skills. Employees use a variety of basic instructional and remedial techniques to develop the basic learning abilities of inmates, using group and individualized instructional approaches. Duties include diagnosing and evaluating inmate achievement, potential, and progress by administering standardized and teacher constructed tests and grading classroom and homework assignments. Work involves responsibility for monitoring inmate behavior and maintaining an effective learning environment in the classroom, maintaining security of classroom materials, completing records, reports, and forms related to the operation of classes, and evaluating inmate performances. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrator or principal with work review through conferences and observation for achievement of educational objectives.
Minimum Experience & Training:
Bachelor's Degree in Elementary or Secondary Education which includes successful completion of a teaching practicum approved by the degree granting institution; OR A bachelor's degree in the Social Sciences, Behavioral Sciences, Education, Special Education, Math, English, or the general Sciences and two years of professional classroom or formalized training, instruction, or teaching experience.

An employee in this job is responsible for providing counseling and guidance services to inmates to encourage participation in educational and training programs. Work includes assessing inmate abilities and needs through tests and individual interviews to determine placement in a setting which will afford the inmate with educational growth to meet identified needs and objectives. Duties involve assisting inmates in selection of courses, post educational goals, occupational choices and continuing education and in providing guidance and counseling with inmates and teachers in resolving problems which may develop with inmates in such areas as attendance, discipline, educational progress or motivation. Work also includes maintaining records of inmate progress and preparing reports of inmate achievements for classification, parole, and employment reference purposes. An employee in this job participates in parole planning and in making recommendations regarding furlough, special privileges, or other changes in inmate status. Work is performed under the general direction of a school principal or administrator and is reviewed through conferences and an evaluation of results.
Minimum Experience & Training:
Two years of professional experience in educational guidance and educational counseling, and a bachelor's degree in the social sciences, behavioral sciences, education, social work, or counseling; OR An equivalent combination of experience and training, which includes one year of experience in educational guidance and educational counseling.
Special Requirements:
Employees assigned to a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma facility must possess a valid and active Educational Specialist 1 or Educational Specialist 2 certification in the field of elementary or secondary school guidance or school counseling issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. When no candidates possess the named certifications, the candidate must be eligible for an Emergency Permit issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education that is appropriate to the position.
An employee assigned to a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma facility who was hired based on eligibility for an Emergency Permit must obtain a valid and active Educational Specialist 1 or Educational Specialist 2 certification in the field of elementary or secondary school guidance or school counseling issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Job Description:
This is professional supervisory and administrative education work at a state correctional institution. An employee in this job has complete responsibility for directing and administering a school within a state correctional institution. Work involves directing and participating in the planning of educational objectives and curricula for compulsory educational programs for school age youths and non-compulsory educational programs for other students, and directly supervising the work of teachers and other staff. Work includes scheduling classes; administering the General Educational Development (GED) program; interpreting program rules, regulations, and policies; providing for the training of staff; completing applications for federal grants; and approving the purchase of educational supplies and equipment. Work is performed independently in accordance with established policies and stated educational objectives and is reviewed by an administrative supervisor for adherence to educational standards and attainment of the desired objectives.
Minimum Experience & Training:
Four years of professional educational experience, including three years as a classroom teacher or education counselor in either a public school, a licensed private school, or in an adult correctional education program approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, and a bachelor's degree.
Condition of Employment:
An employee assigned to a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma facility must possess a valid and active Administrative (Principal K-12), Administrative I (Principal K-12), or Administrative II (Principal K-12) certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, or when no candidates possess the named certifications, must be eligible for an Emergency Permit in the area of Principal or Administrative Provisional I certification in the area of Principal issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Post-Employment Requirement:
