Women's History Month: SCI Pine Grove

​​​In honor of Women's History Month, the Department of Corrections will highlight some of the exceptional women who work for the DOC and the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole. We are grateful for the wonderful women who work in Pennsylvania's criminal justice system.

Rebecca Capizzi
Clerk Typist 2
SCI Pine Grove

Rebecca Capizzi is a clerk typist 2 in SCI Pine Grove's Medical Department. She began her corrections career at SCI Pine Grove in February of 2001. From that date until November 2003, Becky worked in the Food Service Department as the Dietary clerk typist 2. In November 2003, Becky accepted the Medical Department clerk 2 position.

Becky performs her duties in a professional manner and is clear and concise in her communications. She is friendly and maintains a positive attitude that brightens the work place. Her autonomy is the example for coworkers. 

During the past year many additional duties were added to the Medical clerk 2 position, including Psychology Department clerical duties. Becky accepted these new assignments with ease. She also is responsible for timekeeping duties for Medical, Psychology and Inmate Records.

Becky resides in Clymer, Pa., with her husband of 19 years, Sam Capizzi. She enjoys animals, walking and spending quality time with her family.

Susan Bergey
Corrections Health Care Administrator
SCI Pine Grove

Susan Bergey is SCI Pine Grove's Corrections Health Care Administrator. She started her DOC career in 1993 as a contracted psychiatric coordinator/administrative assistant at SCI Huntingdon. In 1997, she transferred to SCI Houtzdale as a contracted healthcare administrator. In 2000, Susan officially joined the Department of Corrections when she accepted the position of corrections health care administrator (CHCA) at SCI Pine Grove, which is the position she holds today.

Not only is Susan respected at the facility, she is respected throughout the department.  She is poised and steadfast in her role coordinating services with multiple contract agencies. Susan sets high personal standards and focuses on helping others reach their full potential.   She is highly professional, always with the objective to get the task at hand completed.     She frequently assists with mock audits preparing facilities for American Correctional Association accreditations. She recently acted as deputy superintendent for centralized services and has always proven to be a team player. 

Although Susan has experienced adversities in life, she remains composed, compassionate and shows genuine interest in others. She is truly a role model and pioneer in advancing the culture of women in leadership roles. 

Susan currently resides in Pine Flats, Pa., with her husband, Brian Bergey. Susan and Brian married in 2014 after an extended engagement.

Angela Smith
Correctional Food Service Supervisor
SCI Pine Grove

Angela Smith, the corrections food service supervisor at SCI Pine Grove, is well respected by her co-workers. She is extremely knowledgeable in the Food Service Department and is always willing to mentor her instructors. Angela has a special approach when dealing with staff and inmates that makes the department run effectively and efficiently. She is a true asset to SCI Pine Grove. 

Most recently, Angela volunteered to be an escort for the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). In addition, she has volunteered to attend an American Correctional Association (ACA) mock audit at SCI Somerset to learn all she could about the audit process and to improve her own area of operations to ensure a successful audit. She is always willing to assist with additional tasks without complaint. 

In addition to her daily duties, Angela is a member of the prison's employee's association.

Angela started her career with the Department of Corrections in January 2009. She was a correctional food service instructor at SCI Pittsburgh for 18 months before she was promoted to correctional food service supervisor up until the announcement was made that SCI Pittsburgh would be closing. Angela was then appointed as acting correctional food service manager for six months and assisted with the closure of SCI Pittsburgh. She transferred to SCI Pine Grove in July 2017, as a correctional food service supervisor, working as the second shift supervisor.

Angela is a proud mother of two daughters and a son, whom she has raised as a single parent. She is also blessed with three beautiful grandchildren, which she loves spending time with. She is involved with several organization in her community and the one she gets the most reward from is volunteering at the local food pantry in her community. Angela enjoys spending all her spare time with family and friends.
