June 22, 2022, marked the 30th anniversary of the Quehanna Boot Camp. From humble beginnings with eight male inmates, 38 staff members and a few buildings, the facility has grown to encompass 18 buildings with 235 staff members. While the population has fluctuated, QBC’s population now remains around 430, serving men and women.

Of the eight inmates in the first platoon, six graduated from the Boot Camp Program on December 22, 1992. As of October 19, 2022, a combined total of 10,414 male and female inmates have graduated from the program.

To meet the ever-changing needs of the inmate population, QBC offers all three facets of Justice Reinvestment Initiative 2 (JRI2)/Act 115: Boot Camp Program, State Drug Treatment Program (SDTP), and Short Sentence Parole.

QBC continues to lead the DOC in the number of GEDs earned. In addition to academic classes, the QBC Education Department offers nine vocational classes ranging from landscape/janitorial to masonry. Individuals participating in the vocational classes are able to pursue careers upon their release.

To commemorate the milestone of 30 years in existence, the QBC Employee Association arranged a special catered meal on Sept. 21. Retirees were invited back to join in the celebration (pictured below), and a table was set up with old photos and photo albums for staff to enjoy. For the week, each department put together a themed basket that was raffled off on Sept. 23 and a 50-50 was held. Ice cream with toppings was offered all week. The money generated from the basket raffle, 50-50, and other fundraisers enables QBC to provide incentives for staff, such as catered meals, ice cream, tacos, money/prize giveaways, and more.
