On April 27, SCI Smithfield held the 2022 Day of Responsibility — a chance for inmates to reflect on victims of crime and the consequences of their actions.

This year’s event, organized under the leadership of Activities Manager Travis Hunsinger and Activities Specialist Shannon Cabell, was sponsored by the Journey for Change inmate organization in two sessions for the permanent inmate population. Through the two sessions, 45 inmates and 12 staff members participated.

This year’s theme was "Growing Through the Darkness, Finding Light For The Future.” Serving as speakers for the event were Daniel McIntyre, director for the Bureau of Reentry Services, and Nicole Evans, victim assistance coordinator for the Office of Victim Advocate. They delivered a powerful message to participants focusing on changing the mindset to become mature, responsible individuals and becoming the best version of themselves. Evans also answered questions about victims’ rights and the Inmate Apology Bank, which allows inmates to write letters to their victims and survivors apologizing for their actions. The program is operated through the Office of Victim Advocate, and victims and survivors may choose to receive letters from victims if they both choose to participate. Four inmates also shared motivational messages, including one who recently received Department of Corrections’ support for commutation and was very inspirational to the inmate population.

This is the first Day of Responsibility since April 2019, and several staff and inmates stated they were glad the event was able to be held this year due to its positive impact and powerful message.
